We had a local sixth form student, Mary, join us recently for a week of work experience and what a pleasure it was! We couldn’t wait to share some snippets of what she got up to during her time here at WDC.
As a Drama and Art student, Mary wanted to further her skills in design and learn more about the tools we use in our interior design projects. We set Mary with an interior design project to work on throughout the week, with the brief – ‘Create a public space of your choosing that serves Manchester and its inhabitants and provides positivity’. Using AI tools and various software packages she came up with an incredible outdoor space concept.

We asked Mary some questions about what she has learnt and what she has enjoyed the most about working in a design agency.
I always loved the idea of studying Art when choosing my GCSE options.
I am most proud of my EPQ on set design. This is because of the time and effort I put into it and how I can use it as a rough guide for an actual set.
I wanted to know what it’s like to work in a creative industry, so when I found WDC Creative, I thought it would give me the best insight.
I was set a project – ‘To create a public space of my choosing that serves Manchester and its inhabitants and provides positivity.’ I worked through this with guidance from the interior design team and met with every other member of the team individually to learn about their role and all the different aspects of the job.
Being able to use Sketchup and Enscape.

The process behind design in the workplace.
All of it!
The set design for the TARDIS in Doctor Who.
Yes!
We loved having Mary here for the week and enjoyed supporting her in this valuable experience. We hope she has learnt a lot from her time with us, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
The design sector can offer an exciting and varied career, where no day is the same and creative thinking is actively encouraged.
